A cherub is one of the unearthly beings who directly attend to God, their duty having been the protection of the Garden of Eden. They have been depicted in religious and secular art all through history including artfully carved gravestones from the 17th through 19th centuries found in some of the oldest burial grounds in New England. The Puritans chose graphic symbols of mortality for their gravestone ornamentation and it served as a warning to a largely illiterate public. Winged skulls, skeletons and hourglasses later gave way to winged soul effigies, cherubs, the classical willow and urn motifs.
This cherub is perhaps a bit spookier than your typical angelic winged baby...
